The C&G 2921-31 qualification is intended for electricians who install, inspect, test and commission electric vehicle (EV) charge points in domestic, commercial and industrial locations. It focuses on safe design and installation in line with BS 7671 Section 722 and current industry good practice, including protective measures on PME supplies, RCD selection, load assessment/load management and documentation.
This qualification is assessed via an online multiple-choice test and a practical/assignment covering design, installation, testing and handover.
This course suits practicing electricians who need to:
Assess supplies and earthing arrangements (including PME/open-PEN risk and solutions).
Select suitable equipment (RCD type/ratings, overcurrent devices, cable types and routes).
Design for load management, diversity and maximum demand.
Install, inspect, test and certify EV charging equipment, and complete handover documentation.
Apply BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 requirements for EV charging (Section 722).
Typical entrants already hold 18th Edition (BS 7671) and are comfortable with inspection, testing and basic circuit design.

On completion, candidates can demonstrate up-to-date competence in EVCP design and installation. Many go on to (or already hold) related qualifications such as 2391 (Inspection & Testing) and 2396 (Design & Verification), and keep current with EV-specific updates via the IET’s EV resources and checklists for the 5th edition Code of Practice.
Candidates are expected to understand fundamental electrical science and have site experience. A working knowledge of:
Protective measures (ADS, RCD types A/F/B), external influences/IP ratings, and isolation & switching.
Maximum demand/diversity and voltage-drop/thermal constraints.
Notification and documentation (test results, schedules, handover).
Industry requirements evolve; keep an eye on IET Wiring Matters and BS 7671 updates affecting Section 722.
